mitral regurgitation (MR): Also known as mitral insufficiency, MR is the abnormal leaking of blood through the mitral valve from the left ventricle into the left atrium of the heart.

myocarditis: An inflammation of the heart muscle most commonly caused by a virus. Can lead to left-sided heart failure.

nuclear scan: Nuclear scans include tests such as radionuclide ventriculography and multiple gated acquisition (MUGA) scanning and allow your doctor to see how much blood your heart pumps with each beat. The tests use a small amount of radioactive material injected into your veins. A special camera detects the radioactive material as it flows through your heart.

New York Heart Association scale: This scale classifies heart failure in categories from one to four. In Class I heart failure, the mildest form, you can perform everyday activities and not feel winded or fatigued. Class IV is the most severe, where you're short of breath even at rest.
